Centre of Excellence Had a Busy 2008

The new Saskatchewan Centre of Excellence for Transportation and Infrastructure “hit the road” with a full slate of activities this year.  The Centre was launched in May of 2008 to further applied transportation research and specialized training programs, through an affiliation with the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Engineering.

“We already have twenty undergraduates and six graduate students doing work at the centre,” says Director Curtis Berthelot. “We have also completed our implementation of project selection criteria, and have been involved in twelve publications of research results.”

The Centre has a wide-ranging mandate to work with the academic community, government, and private sector companies to find new solutions for the existing challenges in transportation infrastructure.  It has a strong working relationship with Communities of Tomorrow, including the participation of CT President John Lee on the Centre’s Board of Directors. Regina Company Credits Communities of Tomorrow for Success

Sean Frisky is a busy man these days.  He has grown an innovative concept into a multi-national company, based in Regina but serving the global market. Sean is the President and CEO of Ground Effects Environmental Services, a company that designs and manufactures technology solutions to remove contaminants  from soil and groundwater sites. The company received significant assistance in the form of expertise and funding from Communities of Tomorrow.

“It allowed us to move forward with a large scale technology commercialization project,” Frisky says of the Signature grant of $250,000 his company received from Communities of Tomorrow. “By receiving the funding, it reduced the risk for all parties.”

The GEE technology uses electrodes in the soil to create an electrical field that removes salt content, eliminating the need to excavate contaminated soil. Along with their proprietary technology, they are also selling portable plants that make the technology usable virtually anywhere. Today their revenues are generated by sales across Canada and around the world, including business with companies in the United States and Australia. [Read more]
