Jim Hyde and a small group of off-road adventurers are in South America following the 2010 Dakar Argentina/Chile rally route. Jim's team are all on GS bikes of varying sizes, including the R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, F 800 GS and F 650 GS. Jim had been sending enthusiastic e-mail blogs from his trip and we'd like to share a bit of it with you.
"I don't quite know how to convey the magnitude of what it means personally to me to not only be witnessing but also riding the Dakar Rally. This is one of the things on my bucket list, and truly one of the things that I wanted to do before I die. So yeah – it's a big deal to me at a personal level. No - I am not racing, I am not a competitor in this ‘the mother of all races' - I am actually just a tourist - tagging along the route! Here we are in Cordoba, Argentina - 11 ‘Norte-Americanos' planning to ride 3000 miles (mostly off-road) in 11 days as we follow the course of the toughest off road race in the world."
"So here's the story - over the last three days we have been shadowing the rally through the Atacama Desert in Chile. The Atacama makes the Sahara desert look like a jungle... there is no oasis here... there is no life. There are no birds... there are no insects... for hundreds of miles there is absolutely nothing alive... not a single blade of grass... and thus it's a perfect place to race. The race zig zags back and forth over the desert and every time it crosses a paved road there is a checkpoint... and thus a place for us to watch the action. A car or truck will come hauling out of the desert... the guy at the check point starts frantically waving his arms to make sure the driver sees him... the vehicle comes skidding to a halt, the guy at the checkpoint stamps a time card presented to him by either the co-pilot or rider and they hit the gas again... there are police standing in the road to stop traffic... and that's how it goes."
When Jim Hyde and his lucky team members return from the Dakar rally by the end of the month, please drop by Jim's web site http://www.rawhyde-offroad.com/home.html for a fully detailed account of this once in a life time adventure.
BMW Motorrad USA Strongest Brand in
Declining Motorcycle Market
Strong Dealer Network, New Products, Make BMW Best Performing Motorcycle Company in America. According to just-released Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reports, BMW Motorrad USA outperformed all of its competitors in 2009. Despite a U.S. motorcycle market that declined 41 percent and lost nearly 360,000 units, BMW motorcycle sales only declined 22 percent, which was the smallest decline among all motorcycle brands. This follows on the heels of 2008 when BMW Motorrad USA was one of only two motorcycle manufacturers to post positive growth.
"Our dedicated dealers were the key to our success this past year," commented Todd Andersen, BMW Motorrad USA Marketing Manager. "Despite the tough market, they continued serve our customers well and promote our new products like the K 1300 S and the K 1300 GT. They were supported by attractive financing programs from BMW Financial Services. While many other dealers struggled to finance their customers' purchases, BMW dealers never lost access to good financing, and this will continue for 2010."
"We expect significant sales growth in 2010," said Andersen, "on the strength of the launch of the production version of the S 1000 RR Superbike, the most powerful and sophisticated sport bike ever produced. Our dealers have confirmed deposits on over 600 bikes and deliveries to customers will begin January 26."
Also slated for the coming year are new versions of BMW Motorrad's most popular models: the R 1200 GS, the R 1200 GS Adventure and the R 1200 RT.
