SHRED-A-THON
Identity theft and credit card fraud continue to plague the United States. In 2008, there were 9.9 million victims and they suffered almost $48 billion in fraud losses. The theft of sensitive personal and financial information is a significant contributor to the problem.

On Saturday, January 16, 2010, the City of Casselberry & Casselberry’s Seniors for a Better Community will hold its first Shred-A-Thon at the Casselberry Recreation Center. The event will be from 8:00 am until Noon at the Recreation Center located at 200 N. Triplet Lake Drive.

The Shred-A-Thon helps to bring awareness of identity theft and to offer citizens and small businesses of Casselberry and surrounding areas an opportunity to safely dispose of personal and business documents. These items could provide thieves with the information needed to steal an individual’s identity or commit credit card fraud.

Sponsors are needed to help offset the cost of this service, production of posters and other promotional material to publicize the event and raise public awareness. All proceeds raised will benefit the Seniors for a Better Community, which is a non-profit organization that raises money for other seniors in the community.

City Awarded Two Tree Grants
In 2008 and 2009, the City of Casselberry was the recipient of two Urban and Community Forestry Program (UC & F) grants from the U.S. Department of Forestry. The grant program, administered through the State of Florida Division of Forestry in Tallahassee, provided funding in the amount of $5000 for the purchase, installation and tree care of 38 Florida native trees in two community parks; Lake Concord and Secret Lake Park. Bald Cypress trees were selected to replant and restore the shoreline areas in the parks because of their preference for a wet environment. Live Oak and Magnolia trees were selected for the upland areas because of their longevity and the additional noise and visual buffer they will provide for the adjacent residential communities. All of the trees selected for the planting project have a high to medium rating for wind resistance.

The second grant in the amount of $12,500 will provide funding for the City to conduct a tree inventory in the City’s parks, right of ways and public spaces. The inventory will locate and identify the different species types and general conditions. The inventory data will assist the City in future on-going tree management and maintenance programs that include watering, pruning, removing and replacing trees.
